The Border Problem

The Senate has just overwhelming (89-1) approved $3 Billion dollars to the border security. Do you feel that spending more money on the border is the best solution to the immigration issue. However, i definitely dont feel that Bush's plan of No Amnesty, in which everyone thats already in counrty gets off the hook anyways (which totally is Amnesty), isn't a real awsome solution either. Perhaps we should just open the whole border up?

This is a real tough issue that has many different tangents and complexitites, but i for one, dont feel that i understand all of this well enough to make a real educated descion on what i support.

What is everyone elses take?

Well, I am not very informed, but it seems to me that 3 billion could be used to defray the medical and social services problem that the immigrants create much more effectively that border patrol. But what do I know?

I feel any secruity increase spending would be better spent developing the Mexican and Central American economies, effectively lessening the need for immigration. Esentially they would be increasing the controls on the boarder and the visa application process, making it more difficult than it already is to come legally--essentially discouraging LEGAL immigration. This will have an opposite effect of encouraging illegal immigration. The only long-term solution is to develop foreign economies ... But I doubt America is going to warm up to the idea of a Latin America with an economy as strong as the European Union. America's economic dominance has already been projected to be lost by 2025.

I saw what illegal immigration can do to a country in South Africa. Drugs, crime, unemployment, and wide spread pandemonium. Your boarders must be controlled and immigration still needs to be encouraged. However I will not support a plan that invests in other countries when my country faces horrible problems at home such as poverty, crime, and poor education systems. I know Latin America has bigger problems but getting involved with other countries problems hasn't served us well as of late. Also 3 billion dollars is way too much money... If the government wasn't the "owner" in the boarder construction project it would cost half the money.

When we were in China, I didn't get free health care or other benefits that come along with being a citizen of a country, nor did I expect it. I was not a part of the country. I didn't add to their tax base. Because of this I didn't expect anything for nothing. I feel if they want to be here that's fine, but they should not get benefits for free. It costs us more tax payer dollars and probably contributes to increased health care and other expenses. I have friends who are working hard to become legal. They do not take anything for free. If everyone could be that way things would work much better. Unfortualtey, I don't have a solution. I think a lot of the problem would be solved if everyone had personal integrity and responsibility. How to achieve that....I don't know.
